In 1919, British plans to intern people suspected of sedition - the Rowlatt Acts - prompted Gandhi to announce a new satyagraha and by 1920 he was a prominent politcal figure. When violence broke out during the formation of the independent states of India and Pakistan in 1947, Ghandi attempted to bring peace to Calcutta and Delhi. The following year he was shot by a Hindu nationalist during a prayer meeting.

However, when AIDS began to spread, it caused a huge increase in deaths in the city. The film focuses on the impact of the disease on the people of San Francisco and how the community rallied together to support one another through the crisis. It is told by the people who lived through the crisis from the very beginning in a less enlightened era when no one knew what AIDS was or where it came from, and it was only known as “the gay disease”. Short-listed for an Oscar.
